Hermosa Surf Camp Information and History

The Hermosa Surf Camp in California was started in 1992 by the City of Hermosa Beach, The Easy Reader Newspaper, Chevron and local Surf Shops. It is our most popular summer program. For boys and girls ages 7-17. You will learn ocean safety, basic surfing techniques and tricks like the switchfoot, coffin and nose ride.  Find out about ocean conditions, sea life and the beach environment. Learn about the best equipment, safe places for you to practice, and travel to exotic beaches. Discover surfings mysterious etiquette.

We will be in the water with you helping you handle the board, paddle out and catch waves. There is a L.A County Lifeguard present at all times.

Classes have a 1:4 teacher-to-student ratio or less for safety and plenty of one-on-one attention. You will practice on a BZ soft surfboard for fun and safety. We have 11 different size surfboards and SUP’s for you to try.  Body boards are also available for rough conditions.

We give you a T-shirt, rash guard (lycra surfing shirt), Spyder goodie bag and three photos of you to keep! Meet other people to surf and travel with.

There is always an instructor on duty that is a Lifeguard and California Credentialed Teacher. We are teachers from the local school. There is always a L.A. County Lifeguard on duty. Administered by The City of Hermosa Beach Community Resources Department.
We often let students with special needs attend the camp if they can swim and have a mild condition. We are professional educators that work in the local schools. We have many years of teaching experience with people who have special needs. A guardian may have to be present for the entire duration of the camp.

Please contact Vince Ray prior to registering at 310-291-4378.

You must be an intermediate swimmer to participate (have completed an intermediate swimming class). If you have a history of seizures, fainting spells or dizziness you cannot participate. Please let us know of any medical conditions that may affect your participation.

Owner’s Biography

Hi, this is Vince Ray, I grew up surfing in Hermosa Beach, California and have surfed most of the beaches from San Francisco to San Diego. We have traveled many times to Hawaii, Costa Rica, Mexico and the East Coast to surf.

As a top amateur surfer, I won first place in the American Surfing Association U.S. Championships and second place in the ISA World Championships. I have also placed in the finals in many local surfing contests in the South Bay. Also competed in these surfing leagues- National Scholastic Surfing Association and the Western Surfing Association.

We have been teaching surfing and water safety professionally since 1989. Join over 8000 successful students! I am an In Home Teacher for Manhattan Beach Unified School District and am working on a Masters Degree in Special Education At Cal State Dominguez Hills. We took Red Cross Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor classes at El Camino College.

How we different from other surf camps

We have the most experience, this summer will be the Hermosa Surf Camps 26th year! We have been teaching surfing professionally for 29 years. Join over 8000 happy students!

Four of our instructors work in the local public schools. Three of them have California Teaching Credentials and one is finishing a Master Degree in Special Education. Two of our instructors are Red Cross Lifeguards, Water Safety Instructors and Swimming Teachers. Most of our instructors have been with us for many years. They are among the highest paid in the industry. Our younger teachers were in the surf camp for years or are junior lifeguards and on their high school surf team.
We carry a lesson plan on the beach in a zip lock bag. It is available on our web site in the image gallery. It is a work in progress and we update it. Do other camps have lesson plans or make them easy to view?

We have created many new instructional strategies to help students learn surfing quicker and safer. We videotape the classes to check on the effectiveness of our teaching techniques.

We treat students as individual learners and use strategies from regular and special education teacher training. We set high goals and check often for understanding. We change the lesson as water conditions dictate or as needed to improve instruction.

Our location south of the Hermosa Pier has smaller waves and rip tides than Manhattan Beach. Manhattan and Redondo beaches are often crowded with expert surfers, body boarders, stand-up paddlers and swimmers.

Hermosa Beach has less people in the water making it a fun, safe place to learn. Hermosa has less shore-break (waves that break real close to shore in shallow water) than Redondo and Torrance beaches making for longer and safer rides.

We are located between the the L.A. County Lifeguard Southern Headquarters at the Hermosa Pier and the 10th street Lifeguard Tower for safety. Our surf camp has an easy, safe drop off location and plenty of parking at 10th or 11th streets. Bathrooms and showers are located at the pier.
Surfboard, body board, wetsuit and bicycle rentals are available nearby. After surfing enjoy the famous 28 mile bike path along the beach. There are many great family owned restaurants and taverns and eclectic shopping all within walking distance!
